Benjamín Serrano. Retrospective at Centro Cultural Tijuana, El Cubo

The exhibition Benjamín Serrano: Trascendencia y Vanguarda desde Tijuana at Centro Cultural Tijuana (CECUT), El Cubo, in Tijuana (Mexico) is dedicated to the almost forgotten Tijunana artist Benjamín Serrano (1939-1988). Benjamín Serrano was born in Tijuana, Baja California, on March 3, 1939. He is considered as the first artist, who portrayed the culture of Tijuana as a hybrid experience on the border to the U.S. and put Tijuana on the international art map. The show brings together 55 of Serrano's works, including painting, sculpture, printmaking and drawing. Curated by Olga Margarita Dávila, the show is the most comprehensive presentation of Benjamín Serrano's work to date. It is organized around four themes: the significant events in the artist's career; the development of his artistic language; Serrano's stay in Paris and his encounter with the avant-garde; and finally his art as a fusion of surrealism, pop art and social anthropology. The exhibition runs until November 2012.
